/about/

What is dev/world/?

Building on the success of Xworld and CreateWorld, /dev/world/ is the AUC’s conference program for student and staff in AUC member Universities who have an interest in developing for Apple platforms. DevWorld 2008 will be held at the Rydges Hotel, Melbourne on 29 – 30 September 2008.

Through presentations and hands on sessions delivered by developers from the University sector and broader community, participants will get the information they need to develop quality applications for Mac OS X and the iPhone/iPod Touch platforms.

A wide range of sessions covering a diverse range of topics such as the iPhone SDK, Xgrid, Ruby, dtrace, Quartz Composer and Core Animation will feature in this 2 day event. The conference will also give developers the opportunity to interact with other AUC members, and learn about projects they are working on.

Please note that attendance is strictly limited to current staff and enrolled students of an AUC Member University.

Who should attend & assumed knowledge?

DevWorld is aimed specifically at students and staff in AUC member Universities who are developing software, teaching software development or have a personal interest. In order to get the most from DevWorld it is recommended participants have experience in at least one programming language (such as Python, Objective C or C++) and are familiar with programming concepts such as Object Oriented Programming (OOP). Some experience using Mac OS X and developer tools will be an advantage but is not essential.

Different streams during the event will cater for people of different skill sets and interests.

It is strongly encouraged that all attendees bring along a Mac laptop with the latest version Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard and the latest version of Xcode installed on it. This will enable you to follow along and do some of the excercises shown during the presentations.

What will I learn at dev/world/?

DevWorld is aimed at all classes of developers ranging from novices to professionals. The conference is structured such that related topics are grouped together into one of three tracks.  Participants can choose which sessions they wish to attend and can switch tracks during the conference.  Broadly, the three tracks are:

Track 1

This track is a structured introduction to development on MacOS X, including the basic tools, Objective C, the Cocoa framework, and building user interfaces, through to polishing and shipping your application.

Track 2

This track is for the more experienced developer.  There will be a number of sessions focusing on various core graphics technologies, and a series of sessions covering tools and techniques, such as dTrace, Instruments and Xgrid.

Track 3

Track 3 is for the developer who requires a different mode of interaction or language.  Sessions in this track cover iPhone development, Web languages such as Ruby (and Rails) and tools such Dashcode along with alternate languages and platforms such as Python Objective C and WebObjects.

More information on the stream sessions.
