  • CreateWorld 08 – Griffith University, Southbank Campus Brisbane    8-10 December 2008
Report by Sian Carlyon and Tony Skinner, Senior Graphic Designers at USQ

Three days of innovative performances, interesting presentations and panel discussions, with hands-on workshops, CreateWorld08 formed invaluable professional development for Academics and Creatives alike.

Virtual worlds (esp. Second Life), iTunes, podcasting, design, music, new media, arts education and research contexts, were explored. This opportunity opens our horizons beyond our specific disciplines. It is inspirational to see how others are adapting their software/tools. It inspires integration of other media in new ways into our work and to think more creatively about using our existing toolsets.

Podcasts were recorded of interviews with session presenters and random audience members by a roving team, including (former) USQ Academic Kate Foy. We were among the first interviewed and that podcast can be found at the Podcast Program of CreateWorld 2008. Select Archive and Creative Modalities of Representation in Graphic Design.

Our thanks go to AUC, USQ, and Ray Smythe for the opportunity to experience CreateWorld08.

  • MacWorld Conference and Expo - Moscone Centre San Francisco - January 5-9, 2009
Report by Jason Myatt, Senior Audio Production Officer at USQ

MacWorld Conference and Expo is the leading end of the industry when it comes to see the latest hardware and software products in the industry.  The networking, opportunities to talk to experts, have demonstrations from developers and see the latest from the manufacturers is invaluable.  I took the advantage to look beyond my own area of interest for software and hardware that could be utilized in the wider USQ community, and I look forward to sharing this.

  • DevWorld 2008 & iPhone Tech Talks Thoughts with Ross Bool, Manager (Technical Services, Psychology), Faculty of Sciences
In Psychology at the University of Southern Queensland we are working on a research project to measure how music effects exertion on athletes.

We choose the iPhone 3G as the development platform with the ability to program it using the SDK and features including GPS, accelerometer, wifi, iPod and plenty of memory to store songs and log data.

Thanks to the support from the AUC, I was able to attend DevWorld in Melbourne and the iPhone Tech Talk in Sydney. These two events helped extend my knowledge and better understand the iPhone and its SDK.

The things I am finding interesting from both these events is how many iPhones have been sold worldwide, the number applications on App Store and how creative developers are using the GPS, accelerometer and multi-touch to make their application unique.

Well back to iPhone development for me.
