Apple University Consortium

The Apple University consortium is pleased to announce it is offering 20 partially funded places to each of the AUC iPhone/ iPod Touch Web Apps Workshop to be held in Sydney on the 24 – 25 July and Melbourne on 31 July – 1 August. These places will be assigned after a review of each submitted application form.

What are the iPhone/iPod Touch Web Apps?

Web applications — or web apps — combine the power of the Internet with the simplicity of Multi-Touch technology on mobile devices such as the iPhone and iPod Touch.

Developers can create Web 2.0 applications that look and behave just like the applications built into iPhone/ iPod touch, and provide seamless integration with iPhone applications and services including making a phone call, sending an email, and displaying a location in Google Maps.

While there is considerable interest in upcoming SDK’s, developers today can quickly and easily develop applications created using web standards extending the iPhone's/ iPod Touches capabilities without compromising its reliability, useability or security

In this workshop attendees will learn how to develop Web App’s for the iPhone/ iPod Touch. Technologies such as HTML, CSS and Javascript will be examined in the context of developing mobile web applications for these devices. In addition to this the workshop will focus on a number of unique features which developers can leverage in their applications, while also outlining some of the issues that need to be considered when developing for the platform.

Who should attend?

The workshop is aimed specifically at students who study computing science, computer engineering, information technology, mathematics, creative arts/design or related disciplines and/or have an interest in developing web applications for portable devices such as the iPhone and iPod touch. Staff from member Universities are also welcome to attend. It is expected that those who attend will have some basic experience using web technologies such as HTML, CSS (Cascaded Style Sheets) and Java Script.

What will I learn at the Workshop?

This workshop will introduce key features of iPhone/ iPod Touch’s web application functionality, along with how web developers can utilise some of the devices unique functionality. In this workshop developers of new and existing web applications will see how to get the most out of this device and how to better fine tune web applications for this powerful platform.
